Kids! of the Month
Amazing Kids! is proud to highlight the Amazing Kids! of the Month! Each
month, we showcase kids who are accomplishing amazing
things. We hope that by telling their special stories, we will inspire
other kids to accomplish their own amazing achievements. Amazing Kids! of the Month for October, 2007: Amazing Young Cooking Show Hosts, Isabella and Olivia Gerasole; Evanston, Illinois
Quotes of the Month “We’ve learned that sticking with something
can be very rewarding. We’ve learned a lot more recipes, too.” Amazing Young Cooking Show Hosts Our October Amazing Kids! of the Month For some families, cooking is viewed as a tedious chore. For others, the same activity is perceived to be an enjoyable and rewarding way to spend time for the entire family. The Gerasoles, particularly 11-year-old Isabella and 9-year-old Olivia, belong to the latter group. The girls say that their father taught them to cook when they were little kids. A childhood passion soon became something more when their neighbor, Miss Gaylon, knowing that the Gerasoles were into cuisine, approached the girls about a cooking project. Not long after that, Isabella and Olivia became involved. Now, with the help of their mother and Miss Gaylon, Isabella and Olivia have their own web casts, which can be viewed at Spatulatta.com, their website dedicated to teaching children to cook through video recipes. The interactive website also includes the girls demonstrating basic cooking skills such as chopping an onion, shredding cheese, and arranging a tray as well as a special section called “Artist In the Kitchen”, where the girls make fun and edible projects including a mini mermaid, a corn husk doll, and a bunny cupcake. And don't forget, if you, or a young person (or persons!) you know, has an amazing project you are involved in, or a special skill, talent or ability you want to tell the world about, be sure to let Amazing Kids! know about it! Teachers are invited to nominate their entire classroom and the amazing projects they are working on too! Simply complete a nomination form for an Amazing Kid! of the Month award, or email us! In addition to being children-friendly, visually attractive, and delicious, Isabella and Olivia’s cooking projects have garnered national recognition: The girls have appeared on both local and national television, newspapers, radio, and magazines such as the NBC Today Show (twice!), The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View, USA Today, National Public Radio, Scholastic Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, to name a few. These days, the girls stay busy. Their very own cookbook will hit stores September 1 of this year, published by Scholastic Press. In addition, Isabella and Olivia are currently working on a television series for PBS. Although the sisters share their love for cooking, each has her own unique ambitions for the future. Isabella wants to write musicals and fiction, and as one might of guessed, cook for her friends as a past time activity. Olivia, on the other hand, is interested in working with animals and aspires to be a veterinarian. She is also open to being an actor or an artist. ![]() Isabella and Olivia getting ready for an interview and Isabella and Olivia at the Today Show with ABC World News Tonight at their house studio. Through cooking, Isabella and Olivia have realized that “sticking with something can be very rewarding”, a concept applicable to not only cooking, but also other endeavors. Moreover, the young cook show hosts encourage others to “never give up!”. The girls have also discovered a profound analogy through their experiences: “Sometimes we mess up a recipe and we have to do it over. It’s the same thing in our lives. If we make a mistake, we just try again. That’s the best way to learn. And very important – have fun!” The girls' website, Spatulatta.com is holding a sweepstakes for a grand prize winning trip to Chicago and an appearance on their show!
