Amazing Kids! is proud to highlight the Amazing Kids! of the Month! Each
month, we showcase kids who are accomplishing amazing things.
We hope that by telling their special stories, we will inspire other kids
to accomplish their own amazing achievements.
Amazing Kids! of the Month for June, 2002: Amazing Binky Patrol Kids, U.S.A.!
Quotes of the Month: "Any age can make a difference. We are regularly asked 'Am I too young to help?' Our answer is always NO!" Susan Roush,
Founder
To kick off the summer months, Amazing Kids! is pleased to shine the spotlight on some caring youngsters from around the country who will spend part of their summer having fun helping other kids. Our Amazing Kids! of the Month for June are the "junior" Binky Patrollers, kids who help an organization called The Binky Patrol make blankets called "binkies" for children in need of comfort. Read all about their hard work and loving efforts below, and who knows? Maybe you'll want to get your friends together and start a Binky Patrol in your area!
You may be wondering "What's a binky?" A binky is a homemade blanket that can be sewn, knitted, crocheted or quilted. They range in size from 3 feet square up to twin bed size. Binky Patrol is an all volunteer, national non-profit organization making and distributing homemade blankets to children born HIV+, drug-addicted, infected with AIDS or other chronic & terminal illnesses, those who are abused, in foster care or experiencing trauma of any kind. The kids receiving the binkies are from ages 0-18. Binky Patrol began in Laguna Beach, California in May, 1996 with founder, Susan Roush putting a sign up sheet in front of her retail business. Starting with just 5 volunteers, Binky Patrol has grown to over 160 chapters and 3000 volunteers nationwide ranging in age from four to 94 thanks to the help of exposure on the Oprah Winfrey Show in June of 1996, Family Circle in 1998, and other media coverage from regional television, radio and newspaper ever since. Last year, Binky Patrol held anonymous baby showers across the country to celebrate their five year anniversary and over 100,000 delivered binkies! You can read stories about some of the kids who have gotten binkies from Binky Patrol here: www.binkypatrol.org/section.cfm?id=230 Read more about

Binky Patrol has volunteers of all ages helping make binkies for the kids. The following profiles are about just a few of the many kids and kids' groups who are junior Binky Patrollers. While we don't have enough space to feature them all, this month's Amazing Kids! of the Month award goes to all those kids out there who are helping volunteer for Binky Patrol!
Amazing Binky Patrol Kid: Elena from Troy, New York Earlier this year, Elena Tarnowski age 12 from Troy, New York threw an "anonymous baby shower" to help babies in her area. She had a clever idea. Some people wanted to give gifts in addition to the binkies. So she signed up at the babies registry at Babies R Us and Target. That way, people who wanted to help out could purchase gifts through the registry. Read more about

Amazing Binky Patrol Kids: St. Anne's Elementary and Middle School, Laguna Niguel, California St. Anne’s elementary and middle school in Laguna Niguel, California held their own "Bink-A-Thon" in April! These industrious kids turned their entire gymnasium into an amazing sewing and painting factory! Every student in the school hand painted a fabric square and the parent volunteers and school staff sewed them together. When they were through, they had seventy binkies to the home group of Binky Patrol! Their binkies were then given to foster children and motel kids in Orange County to help them feel very special and loved! Read more about it here: www.binkypatrol.org/article.cfm?id=229 Binky Patrol Contact Information: Editor's Note: If you're interested in joining Binky Patrol, be sure to check out their upcoming event: Binky Jamboree on Saturday, June 22!
