Our Hero -
based on a true story
The heroes I know, I read about in my history
books. I'm only eleven years old, in 5th grade, and you do not get
to meet many. But I have met one hero, and his name is Corey Tice.
Corey is a 6th grader at Stafford Middle School.
On Friday, February 27, 1998, at 7:45 p.m., Corey showed he is a hero.
Corey saved his little sister, Ronny-Kaye. Ronny-Kaye has cerebral
palsy and is in a wheelchair. She is nine years old and goes to school
with me. She is in 3rd grade. If Corey had not thought quickly
and gone to help Ronny-Kaye, she might not be here with us at Stafford
Elementary School.
Corey's and Ronny-Kaye's house had caught fire.
I asked Corey what made him so brave and he said,
"I don't know, it was just instinct."
Corey told me that he knew where Ronny-Kaye
was, so he ran to help her so she could get out of the house. I asked
him if he was afraid of being hurt and he said,
"No, I knew how I was going to get out.
I knew I had to do it, and I was used to carrying her around."
I think he showed he was a hero because heroes
always help other people. I asked Corey what he was thinking about
at that moment and he said,
"There were a million things on my mind, but
mostly, 'I've got to get her out.'"
Ronny-Kaye is real lucky to have a brother
like Corey and we are lucky to have him in our community.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Chelsea Cayer
