    Hannah's Gift

"Yes, I scored the first goal of the whole season!" said twelve year old Hannah, from Montreal, Canada.

Hannah was on the A-line of the girls hockey team called the Bears.

"Nice goal, Hannah," said Coach Scott.

"This is my lucky rink, Ellie," said Hannah to her best friend on the team.  "every time we played here last year, we always won!"

"You're so lucky, Hannah.  You always score goals, and you're on the A-line, and I'm only on the B," said Ellie, not sounding very happy.

"That's how I started out too; but all you need is a little practice, and you'll be as good as me.  Why don't you come over today and we'll work on some shots together?"

"Okay.  Meet you at the playground at 3:00 p.m.," said Ellie, a little more cheerfully.

At 3:00, they met at the playground with their hockey sticks.

"Nice shot, Ellie.  Next time, get your hand further down the stick, and you might lift it, to make it go over the goalie's head."

         "Okay, like this?" asked Ellie.

"Great job!  Let's work on passes now," said Hannah, trying to sound encouraging.

That night after Hannah had dropped Ellie off at her house, she was talking to her parents.  "You know what?  I had a lot of fun teaching Ellie her shots today, and I really like little kids, so maybe I could start a little skating school."

"Oh goodie, can I be in your little skating school?" asked Lanny, Hannah's little sister happily.

"Sure, but first you have to learn how to stand up."

"I think that would be a great idea, Hannah, especially since you're so good with little kids," said her mom.

"Okay, I'll start making ads to stick on the bulletin board at Sidney's," their neighborhood store.

The next day Hannah finished the ad and this is what it looked like:

"Hey!  I wanna be in your little duckling school!" cried Lanny.

"Oh, don't worry Lanny.  When you're in my class, you'll be a little duckling," said Hannah laughing.

"Hey, Mom.  I'm gonna go call Ellie and see if she can come and help me put the ads on the bulletin board at the store."

"Okay, but make sure you're home by five," said Hannah's mom.

It was 4:30 p.m. then, so they only had a half of an hour to get the signs posted.  When they got there, there wasn't a lot of room on the board, so they put some on the door.

The next day Hannah got a lot of calls about kids wanting to be in the class.  There were six kids in the class.  Hannah had to get six duckling hats for the kids.  (Hannah had been planning this since she made the ad.)

When the first class started, the kids were a little rowdy.  At first Hannah told all the kids to sit down on the ice and then try and stand up.  Johnny and Kayla succeeded, but the others didn't.  When everybody had given up, Hannah showed them how.

"You put one foot on the ice, and the other, bend straight up and push with that leg and you're up!" she explained.

Johnny, Kayla, Cammie and Lanny did it!!!

Next, they worked on learning how to skate.

"Stand up and let's pretend that we're walking, okay?" said Hannah.

"Good. Good. Now start to glide."

         "Like this?" said Johnny.

"Yes, just like that; you're doing so much better, all of you, and I have a surprise!" said Hannah excitedly.

She pulled out the hats and gave them out.

"Yeah!" said all the kids at the same time.

After they got off the ice, Hannah gave out the flyers to the parents, telling when the classes would be.

After they had had a couple of classes, Hannah was counting the money that she had raised, and she had $56.00!

"Hey, this is just enough to buy Lanny that new doll she wanted!!" said Hannah excitedly.

That day when she was going to the grocery store, she sneaked to the toy store to get the toy for Lanny.  When she had wrapped it, she gave it to Lanny.  Lanny was so excited, she almost broke Hannah's eardrum!
