A Little Secret

by Amanda LaMunyon, age 12

She looks like any other little girl.
But she holds a secret you might never suspect.
There is something different about her.

Sometimes she gets so interested in ancient Egypt; she will talk about nothing else, even if you don’t want to hear about it, or she might start talking about a movie she saw and you won’t have a clue what she is talking about.
She is very well meaning, but sometimes misunderstood.

She would never hurt anyone’s feelings, but she sometimes does
And doesn’t even know it.

Some say she is a “little professor”.
And truly they are right.
She knows a lot about what interests her.

Her clothes bother her a lot.
Just a little tag might feel like sand paper.
She might change clothes 5 times just to try to get comfortable.

Food needs to taste just right
Or it won’t be eaten
She thinks she can’t go a week without ice cream.

When there are a lot of people around
It’s hard to stay in control.
Movement really gets to be confusing.
It makes her want to run.

And in the lunchroom when everyone is talking
She wants to stand up and say BE QUIET!!!!!
Noise is a real problem.

And lights……….light is 100 times brighter to her.
Oh what a world she lives in.

What is this little secret she holds?
It’s called Aspergers Syndrome, a high functioning form of Autism.

Many people are suspected of having it:
Einstein, Michael Angelo…………

It is said that 1 out every 150 children will be diagnosed with autism.
How do I know so much about Aspergers Syndrome?
I know because I have it.

Some say it is a disability.
But, I am a girl with dreams.
I say, I will take what God has given me
Along with the challenges and use it
To fulfill the purpose He has for me.

The Bible says in Psalm 139: 13& 14: “ For you created my inmost being: you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
Your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

And so I say to you,
If you know someone who seems a little different
Look for something good.
It will be there.
It may be just “a little secret” waiting to be told.
A dream waiting to unfold.
