The Funny Thing is...

By Brittany, Student Editor-in-Chief

Want to write something fresh and exciting, with a catch-your-reader's attention twist? Try your hand at humor! While writing funny may be popular, it also opens the doors to be extra creative...or confusing. To make sure your humor writing ends up...humorous...look over these hints, then try it out!

1. Try, try again
What's one of the greatest tips in comedy? Don't give up! If writing funny articles doesn?t quite fit you, then that's ok! Don't get discouraged, though, if you can write articles that are funny, yet everything doesn?t always turn out the way you wanted it to. Just keep writing. You're bound to get it right after a few tries!

2. A silly life
Low on funny-fuel? Change your perspective. See everyday, funny things around you, and then exaggerate them. For example, you might put up the Christmas tree crooked...for the hundredth time! But, if you look at the funny side, you could write about it and turn the situation into a crooked-tree-farm funny fiction!

3. The best critics
You don't have to rent out a fancy concert hall-or even publish your work-to get someone to look over your silly sagas. In fact, the best critics to look over your work could be-literally-right at your front door! Family, friends, and neighbors that you are close to would probably love to read your funny writing. If they offer advice, think about possible using it when you write your next funny piece. You never know what you might learn!

4. That's not even funny
Write a funny article? Good idea. Write a funny article with not-so-funny stuff in it? Bad idea. A big no-no in humor pieces is using things that could offend other people. What type of things? Let's just put it this way...if your Mom or Dad dosen't think it's a nice thing to talk about, it's probably not a nice thing to write about, either.

5. Be sincerely silly
What's worse than a bad joke? A bad joke with no feeling behind it. When you write funny, write like you really mean it. Don't go out of your way to be fancy or professional, and try not to use someone else's comedy routine. Create your own way to write funny, and you'll be a lot better off.

Well, that's all for now folks! Try your hand at comedy writing. You might end up as the funniest kid on the block!
