Kids! of the Month
Amazing Kids! is proud to highlight the Amazing Kids! of the Month! Each month, we showcase kids who are accomplishing amazing things. We hope that by telling their special stories, we will inspire other kids to accomplish their own amazing achievements.
Amazing Kids! of the Month for March, 2000: Amazing Young Inventor Austin Meggitt, 12 years old, Amherst, Ohio
his invention, the "Glove and Battie Caddie!"
Amazing Austin's Story Meet Austin Meggit. Like many other 12 year old boys, Austin is involved in lots of activities outside of school, like Boy Scouts, the school newspaper, soccer, and baseball. When Austin was 9 years old, he wished
there was a way to make it easier to carry his baseball equipment on his
bike when he rode it to practice. He saw other kids riding their
bikes to practice, and they had the same problems he had with carrying
his equipment. He then decided that he should invent a bat and glove
carrier for his bike. He called it the "Glove and Battie Caddie."
The Glove and Battie Caddie attaches to the handlebars of your bicycle. Austin's teacher liked the idea so much that Austin was asked to enter his invention into "The Ultimate Invention" contest. From over 400 entries, Austin's invention was seleted as the National Grand Prize Winner! The following year, Austin was honored by being inducted into the National Gallery for America's Young Inventors, National Inventors Hall of Fame, in Akron, Ohio! He was the youngest recipient of this award in 1999! Only six students were selected nationwide. This past year, Austin completed his own application for a United States Patent. After visiting the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, D.C., Austin has learned that his invention is an original and will be obtaining a US patent. It all began as a simple idea to solve
a common problem kids have, and now Austin has been inducted into the "Inventors
Hall of Fame." Now that's amazing!
