Amazing Kids! of the Month for March, 2000: Amazing Young Inventor Iliana Jäätmaa, 15 years old, Frederick, Maryland
Amazing Iliana's Story Meet amazing Iliana. Iliana, currently 15 years old, was a first place winner in the 1999 Duracell /NSTA science competition for her project "Pangaea - the world in motion." She created her invention, "Pangaea, the world in motion ©", when she was still in middle school. "Pangaea" is a battery-powered learning tool to teach children of all ages about how the continents have drifted throughout time, by visually illustrating the Pangaea theory in action. Iliana first heard about the Duracell/NSTA competition when she joined the science club at her middle school. Her science teacher encouraged her to enter the competition. She started doing research for her invention on the Internet. In order to build her invention, she had to borrow tools from her uncle, and buy some at the hardware store. Hard-working Iliana received a $20,000 savings bond as the prize for winning the competition! Way to go, Iliana! Want to know more?
