Kids! of the Month
Amazing Kids! is proud to highlight the Amazing Kids! of the Month! Each month, we showcase kids who are accomplishing amazing things. We hope that by telling their special stories, we will inspire other kids to accomplish their own amazing achievements.
Amazing Kids! of the Month for March, 2000: Amazing Young Inventor Lisa Marie Wright, A.I.M.S. Arts Impact Middle School, Columbus, Ohio
Amazing Lisa's Story Meet amazing Lisa, a middle-school
student in Columbus, Ohio. In January, 2000, Lisa received a "Student
Ideas for a Better America" award from the National Museum of Education (formerly Partnership for America's Future,
Inc.) Her invention also won a 1st place award in the local science
fair!
students to be inducted this year! Way to go, Lisa! Lisa's invention, the "Auto-Off" (or "Wright") Candle, is a self-timing candle, that can be set to "turn itself off" at a specific time interval (there are several versions of the candle which shut off in either 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes.) Lisa's candle is safer than the ordinary candle because, when left unattended, it stops burning after a preset amount of time, so it won't start a fire if you forget to blow it out! Like our other
amazing young inventors this month, Lisa is active in many other activities
when she is not inventing. Lisa recently participated in a writing contest
through her school, A.I.M.S. Arts Impact
The production is about 15 short stories and is performed by a touring company which will be traveling to Ohio schools throughout 2000 to perform their amazing show. The theatre company targets school age kids to get involved in the arts, writing, performing, stage crew, etc. to encourage expression and achievement!! Lisa's dad Michael says, "THIS IS A WONDERFUL PROGRAM !!" They will be performing the 15 short stories to an estimated 30,000 kids this year! Check out Lisa's winning story, and the others, on their web site at: www.colschildrenstheatre.org. Want to know more? Read more about Lisa and her amazing
invention on the National Museum of Education's website:
