The Tower of Youth logo
Quote of the month:
"Our commitment is to give kids a voice, because
we think the world is
at risk, and we think kids are the solution, not
the problem."
Dr. William Bronston, Founder, CEO,
Tower of Youth
This month, Amazing
Kids! is proud
to feature the amazing young digital artists
from the Tower of Youth in Sacramento, California. These award-winning
budding young filmmakers proved that they've got the "right stuff" to be
professional filmmakers someday! Are you ready to be inspired?

Teen Digital Reel Showcase and
Awards
Have you ever dreamed of making your
own movie someday? This dream has become a reality for the hard-working
teens who participatied in the 4th annual Tower of Youth Teen Digital Reel
contest.
This annual contest is hosted by an
amazing non-profit youth organization called the Tower
of Youth or "TOY", (www.towerofyouth.org).
The organization was founded by Dr. William Bronston, as a way of empowering
young people, ages 14-21, and giving them real-world experience and responsibility.
Teens in TOY can participate in several
arts-oriented "development groups," including film/video, performing arts,
digital graphics, radio and journalism/news service. The teens themselves
become TOY board members of their own guild, called "Youth Broadcast
and Media Association."
TOY member Jenessa Peterson, a 1998
Placer High School graduate who is now majoring in communications at Sierra
College says: "TOY is a collaboration of young people in media and
the arts, forging together to find our place, to find a voice and to reshape
the way that teenagers are seen in the media."

Teen Digital Reel Contest "Wonder
of Beauty" category by amazing
young animators George Michel
and Travis Wayne Johnson
Each year, the youth board members
help to produce 3 annual events, the Lenaea Theatre Festival, the All-Youth
Film and Education Day, and the Teen Digital Reel Showcase and Awards.
This year's amazing Teen Digital Reel
awards event included exciting presentations by film industry professionals.
Leo Chu, the Vice President of Creative Affairs for Walt Disney Feature
Animations, and Roger Raderman, founder of iFilms Corporation, spoke about
careers in the digital world in a presentation entitled: "Digital
Career Visions."
Their presentations were so packed
with excellent advice in how to start your own career in the digital arts,
many people have been requesting a copy of the video of the presentation
from TOY! It seems that many teens today (and not only the TOY teens)
are excited about one day having their own digital career!
The Amazing
Digital Reel Awards
The 4th Annual
"2000" TOY Award Celebration was held on Sunday, March 12, 2000 at the
Davis Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Davis, California.
This year, the
judges chose 20 winning pairs of youth who co-produced digitally made short
"movies" in the following categories:
-
Commercial/PSA
("Public Service Announcement")
-
Art of Living
-
Schools 2000
-
Wonder of Beauty
-
Short Story
All entries were
produced under the guidance of some amazing mentors, professionals who
gave both their time and expertise to the students on the digital production
teams. As part of a unique partnership between TOY and the University of
California, Davis, the student teams and their high school teachers and
mentors attended a series of Saturday workshops held in the Davis campus'
New Media Center (NMC), where they used the center's computer equipment
to complete their projects. All projects were produced using the
latest software on Power Macintosh and PC computers, and demonstrate the
"cutting edge" of school digital computer graphics!
These amazing
young award-winning filmmakers were recently honored at a reception given
by the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California where their films were
continuously displayed from April 4 - 30, 2000.
You can watch
a movie (in Windows Media Player format) of this year's TOY Teen Digital
Reels Showcase and Awards event on the TOY website at: www.towerofyouth.org.
Check it out, and who knows?
Maybe you will find yourself producing your own amazing digital film one
day too!

A
Special Message from Amazing Kids! for all you kids:
It's no secret...every person has
an "amazing-ness" inside of them, just waiting to be discovered.
(Sometimes we just need a little help in finding out what that "amazing-ness"
is!)
If you are doing some amazing things
too, we want to hear about it! Send
us your stories about your amazing accomplishments, so we can tell
the world just how amazing you are! We are always looking for new
stories. And don't be shy! We'd love to hear from you!
Here's an idea you might want to
try:
WHY NOT HELP
OTHERS SEE THEIR OWN POTENTIAL?
If you know someone who needs a little
encouragement, why not tell them what you think is special about them?
Maybe you can be the one to help them uncover their own special
talents!
Amazing Kids! is looking for teens
to be Amazing Teen Volunteers and Ambassadors.
If you'd like to join Amazing Kids! in helping to spread the word, please
email us at: info@amazing-kids.org.
HELP US SPREAD
THE WORD:
It's
cool to be an Amazing Kid!
|
Calling All Amazing
Kids! We Need Your Help!
If you are, or know any kids who are,
doing amazing things, we
want to hear about it!
Send us your stories, so we might
be able to feature you too someday! Please be patient, and
we will do our best to tell your story some day -- hopefully soon!
